The Return of Grass Cloth

Published March 26, 2012 by Julie Provenzano

As wallpaper is slowly finding respect in the modern American home, so is grass cloth.

What is it? Well, just like it sounds, grass cloth is a wall covering woven from long strips of dried natural fibers like grass or hemp. The beauty of grass cloth for a neutral backdrop is that is adds a textured look to any room. Available in both coarse and fine styles, it evokes a sense of nature and the outdoors. Because of its natural composition, grass cloth has become an increasingly popular choice in homes featuring eco-friendly and green design elements.

Best locations for grass cloth? Because it doesn't play well with moisture, it's not a great choice for high-humidity areas such as poorly ventilated bathrooms. Also, it can fray under repeated rubbing and bumping so it's not ideal for high-traffic areas. The best locations are living and dining spaces, offices, libraries and bedrooms.
